Debbie Shawcross

Professor Debbie Shawcross is a Clinician.....

Scientist and Professor of Hepatology and Chronic Liver Failure at the Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies, King’s College London. She works as a Consultant Hepatologist on the King’s College Hospital Liver Unit with a specialist interest in hepatic encephalopathy and the complications of cirrhosis.  

 

Debbie Shawcross is an internationally recognised liver specialist and passionate advocate for tackling the growing burden of chronic liver disease. Frequently featured on TV, radio, and in print, she speaks out on the dangers of excessive alcohol use and the urgent need for prevention. 

 

She was elected to the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Scientific Committee and Governing Board in October 2022 and is currently serving as its first female Secretary General.  

 

As an advocate for high quality education and training in gastroenterology and hepatology she served as a Health Education England London Gastroenterology Training Programme Director for 10 years serving on the British Society Gastroenterology (BSG) Specialist Advisory Committee and Training Committee, BSG Mentor and an active member of the BSG Supporting Women in Gastroenterology. She is Chair of the BSG Research Committee and sits on the BSG Executive Committee and Council, Clinical Advisor for the British Liver Trust and a Trustee for GUTS UK Charity. 

 

Her research programme characterises the immunobiology of chronic liver failure focusing specifically on the gut-liver-brain axis in the context of the gut microbiome as a driver of immune dysfunction, inflammation and encephalopathy. She is leading the field in clinical trials of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in Europe and is Chief Investigator of the NIHR-funded EME UK multicentre randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial of FMT (capsules) [PROMISE Trial] in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated and alcohol-related cirrhosis.

Manon Allaire

Dr Manon Allaire is Doctor of Medicine in.....

La Pitié Salpétrière Hospital in Paris, headed by Pr Thabut. She focuses on teaching and research in hepatocellular carcinoma with focus in portal hypertension and systemic therapy.


Dr Allaire obtained her medical degree in Hepatology and Gastroenterology in 2015 and her complementary medical degree in Medical Oncology in 2017. She is responsible of the Department of primary liver tumor in La Pitié Salpétrière Hospital, and of clinical and translational trials focus on primary liver tumor.

Dr Allaire is also member of the Proliferation, Stress and Liver Physiopathology unit in the group of Dr C. Desdouets in the Centre de Recherche des Cordeliers in Paris. Her team aim to study new immune biomarkers to predict response to immunotherapy and the impact of portal hypertension on the management of hepatocellular carcinoma.


Dr. Allaire also plays an active role in international liver cancer research communities. She serves as part leader for advocacy within the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) and is a member of the International Liver Cancer Movement (ILCM).

Peter Irving

Professor Peter Irving is Consultant.....

Gastroenterologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Foundation Trust in London and Professor of IBD at King’s College London 

He trained in medicine at Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College and then specialised in gastroenterology in London before undertaking an IBD fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. He has a large IBD practice and a number of active research interests in translational research, clinical IBD and clinical trials. He has published widely in IBD including several books and book chapters and over 250 peer-reviewed articles. He has formerly been a member of the BSG IBD Committee, Chair of the Education Committee of ECCO and ECCO e-Learning Ambassador and previously sat on the UEG Education Committee.

Bu'Hussain Hayee

Professor Hayee is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at ........

King’s College Hospital and has been Clinical Director for Liver, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy since October 2022. He trained at Guy’s Hospital (GKT Medical School), graduating in 1999, and was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2015. His PhD, awarded in 2010, examined the role of innate immunity and neutrophil function in Crohn’s disease. In 2011, he was awarded a travelling fellowship to Yokohama, Japan, to study advanced endoscopic techniques with Professors Haruhiro Inoue and Shin-ei Kudo.

He is a Professor in Gastroenterology at King’s College London and maintains an active research interest, supervising several PhD

fellows and basic scientists.

 

He is nationally-accredited for bowel cancer screening colonoscopy and has specialist interests in bariatric and third-space endoscopy, robotics and artificial intelligence, supported by NIHR project grant funding.

 

He is also Co-director of the King’s Institute of

Therapeutic Endoscopy and Training Academy. In the past, he has held national positions of responsibility including Clinical Lead in Digital Innovations at NHSX, Director of the London Endoscopy Academy and one of three Clinical Leads for the Greener NHS Programme in London as well as leading the Green Endoscopy

initiative.

Loey Lung-Yi Mak

Dr Mak is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the........

University of Hong Kong. She is a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology and a clinical researcher focusing on chronic hepatitis B infection. She has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals, many of which have been cited in international clinical guidelines and led to

advancement in development of novel drugs in clinical trials. Dr Mak is currently an associate editor for Clinical Molecular Hepatology, Gut

Science, and JGH Open, editorial board member for Journal of

Hepatology and Hepatology

Communications. She has received numerous academic awards, highlights being the Emerging

Leader Award by EASL in 2023 and The Rising Star Award (runner-up), Global Women in Healthcare Awards by the EMMS International and Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2025. She is a Principal Investigator of in the State Key Laboratory of Liver Research in The University of Hong Kong.
